Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s:
I chose this video because I like abstract expressionism and pop art. I enjoyed reading about it in the chapter and viewing some example at the art gallery. Abstract Expressionism was created from American and European avant-garde art. However, it was later rejected when the Pop art came about. The way the canvas is used and the space is filled is very different between Abstract Art and Figurative Art. Figurative paintings allow the viewers to travel into it but abstract painting works I the real space and our physical and intellective response to it. Kline a famous artist abandoned figurative art to start abstract which as an artist he uses shapes that brings up emotion. In many of his works it is color that captures out immediate attention. His use of color ranged from not a lot to using more color, but sometimes it is difficult to tell because of the mixture of colors. Sometimes the colors are translucent other times they are thick blocks. In Frankenthaler’s work changed the way we looked at a picture because of her vision. Frankenthalers work is feminine, mystical and creates a contemplative mood. While viewing her types of work you feel warm and thrilling. De Koonig creates works that appear to be in motion. He became famous for his action painting and his name was known by his instinctive approach to painting. John’s uses paint to create pattern by using blobs, drips and layers of paint. When viewing it you at first see the whole, but then the viewer gets engulfed in the personal experience with the work. In the 60’s Andy Warhol was a very famous pop artist. The movement of pop art wasn’t very clear, but it was the first 20th century movement since Futurism which embraced the culture of city life. Rauschenberg and Warhol was iconic artist during this time and helped create a way for pop artists to use everyday objects. Lichtenstein created a work that had both representation and abstract art details in it. The more you focus on the work the less the image is seen and the detail work becomes the main focus. Lichtenstein thought that the style that was used should depend on the work that was being done, however he also focused on themes that stirred emotion and passion. This relates to our text book because it discussed the concepts of abstract expressionism and Pop Art. The video also touched slightly on the feminine movement. The video gave examples of artists that we had read about in the book and some other examples of their works. I thought that this video was ok. A little dull at time, but it definitely had a lot of useful history and factual information about the artists and their works.

Andy Warhol: Images of an Image:
I chose this video after watching the last one. In the last video it talked about Warhol being the “son” of the pop art era and respecting Rauschenberg as the “father”. I thought his work was interesting and thought I might be able to see more through watching this video. Warhol was a commercial artist until 1960 which is when he then began attempting advertising images. He worked until his death in 1987. He never wanted to be an artist but wanted to be a tap dancer. His fascination and interest in the life of famous people inspired many of his repeated images. He had collected and saved many images from famous people such a Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. He created the Marilyn piece in the silk screening process, which made him very famous. He created a silk screen image of Elizabeth Taylor as well, but made another one of a double Liz. They explained the silk screen process and how today we use different materials than they did during that time. Andy Warhol saw that the repeated silk screen image was a way to make money. Warhol took pictures and filmed his friends, shooting about 100 films. He then began to add paint to the silk screened images. Warhol created numerous self portraits. He was an art journalist so much of his work addressed race riots, the conquest to the moon, the Cultural Revolution in China and the reign of the dollar. This relates to our text book because our book features Warhol as an artist providing a short biography on page 504. You can also see how it relates because it talked about how he was influenced by Marilyn Monroe and in our book we saw an example of one of his pieces featuring her. I liked this video I thought it was very interesting and enjoyed watching the process. I also thought it was interesting to learn that some of the images that he used were merely cut from magazines.

Uncertainty: Modernity and Art:
I chose this video because I think that Modern Art is very interesting. In my opinion it is very unpredictable and different, so this video just intrigued me. Modern art communicates chaos, anxiety, and uncertainty. Modern art is our society’s version of the Delphic Oracles. Modern Art is the metamorphosis of mankind, because art holds its own memories. In the 19th century the Industrial Revolution took over and man and nature were separated because machines ruled the world and science changed religion. Modern art was part of this changing world. The main message of Modern Art is uncertainty. This type of art is different from the past which was inspirational and idealized. A modern exhibit is that of Tate’s and is often misunderstood. The sculpture was made of 120 bricks laid out in a rectangle. Modern Art got popular in the 19th century and it took off in the early 20th century. Modern Art keeps changing and responding to modern life. The 20th century was full of mass production and speed. Life was becoming fragmented and Picasso made art as an antidote to mass culture. Nazism was a political force that mandated total power. In the Nazi regime nothing was unsure. Hitler had annual exhibitions of Nazi art and the Nazi families were full of Aryan purity. Picasso showed modern art in Guernica and illustrated a fractured reality. He used cubism which doesn’t use anything recognizable or round. Abstract art leaves the recognizable world behind. The viewer has to interact with the work and rely on their own interpretations. Modern materialists enjoyed the urban environment and use straight lines, rectangles and flat colors. Some famous Abstract Expressionist’s were Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. The types of artists ask the viewer to look at a piece and fill in the space. These artists were outcastes because they didn’t use the values of consumerism. Abstract Expressionism is full of uncertainty, artist with attitudes and fighting for a cause. This video relates to our text because it talks about a number of different styles of art and artists. It discussed Modern Art, Expressionism, and Pop Art among many others. It also showed examples of Rothko and Warhol and their styles of art. The video was average. I did enjoy seeing the numerous different styles of art and learning more about the history of when they were made.

Isamu Noguchi: The sculpture of Spaces:
I chose this video because I thought that it would talk about installations and I really enjoyed that project so I thought that this video would neat to watch. Isamu Noguchi was a sculptor who has a vision for space and sculpture. His childhood gave him interest in sculpture gardens and his feelings of isolation. Noguchi was very poor both in Paris and the USA. To make a living he sculpted heads, this including Martha Graham. In 1980 he was commissioned to redesign Miami’s Bayfront Park. A retrospective of his sculptures shows his artistic style and vision. He used different media to try to get different effects, this including water which created a new approach to sculpture. He created a playground sculpture in the “Black Water Mantra” which was created due to his commitment to creating something useful for people. This work provided a lot of joy to the children. Noguchi created a garden in Jerusalem which is commended for its understanding to the spirit of the Holy City. He thought that there was a real connection between the viewer and the piece he is observing. In his “Celebration of Life” is a garden that is made of metal, stone, grass and earth. In 1988 he created the plan for the 400 acre Moere Numa Park in Japan. He used 3-d models to help him see himself inside the space. This video relates to our text because most of the last chapter had to do with how we interact with art and how that changes our perception of it. Noguchi created works that people could really interact with and appreciate. I enjoyed this video and thought that his work was very interesting. I really liked the aerial view of Moere Numa park.
